Zazzle's 'Mystica Maxima': A New Home for Spiritual Tolerance?
by Sean Parsons
Mystica Maxima is a shop that stands worlds away from Zazzle's popular, over-saturated fluffy-bunny content. While there are many unique and brilliant shops, you won't find many that incorporate alternative religions and spiritual systems all in the same place. It's not every day you find a website promoting Hinduism and Wicca in the same breath.
So what is Zazzle? In a nutshell, Zazzle is a print-on-demand (POD) company based out of Redwood City, California. It was founded in 1999, and picked-up by Google in 2005. From there, it has become an international success. The basic concept is that anyone who becomes a member (which is entirely free) can upload their own art or images and place them on an extraordinarily diverse selection of products; a very brief list of which are: t-shirts, mugs, posters, pillows, necklaces, mouse pads, business cards, creepers, stickers and laptop sleeves.
The most brilliant and attractive aspect to Zazzle is that if a customer is only there to buy and not create their own art, most of their artists allow you to personalize and add custom text to things like business cards, invitations and t-shirts. For example, if you found a coffee mug with an image of your zodiac sign, you could customize it with your name or anything you like. Although you cannot customize every piece of art (some artists reserve that right and do not allow you to, which is perfectly understandable), you can customize any product.
This is one of the reasons 'Mystica Maxima' has become such popular entity in the POD niche. Not only is it highly unique in the Zazzle marketplace, but due to the amazing freedom to customize any and all art you like there, it is difficult not to return again and again. For the average person who may not be familiar with other religions or spiritual paths, it allows them the opportunity to peruse art and culture they might not have otherwise come in contact with.
Every day new products are being added, and new categories pop-up every so often. Currently, there are over 7,000 products to choose from and customize, and is sure to be double that number by the end of the year.
With such a huge selection of gifts from astrology and mythology, to ancient Egyptian deities couched alongside Hindu deities, 'Mystica Maxima' stands as a very thoughtful and open-minded approach to business that one can only hope becomes a much greater trend in not only POD niches, but many others as well.
