Street Theatres

Street Theatre can often be one of the nicest surprises as you take a stroll on a weekend afternoon in many cities. However, many of the acts seem to recur wherever you are: here are a few could well see.

Sword Eater

Sword eating is an extremely dangerous thing to attempt to do but is also one of the most exciting acts to watch. Clearly it takes years to learn how to do it properly - and there's a huge skill to being able to open your throat like that. On the other hand the performer is always extremely talented and the actual number of incidents of sword eaters actually dying is extremely low.

Statues

Statues in their own right are interesting enough, with plenty to learn when we read about who they depict and why they have been commemorated like this. However, you are also likely to see a "live" statue when you are out and about in a city centre, with the street artist often dressing up as someone famous and holding a pose for hours. Sometimes they'll dress exactly like that person or at other times they'll spray themselves entirely in grey paint so as to look exactly like a statue. Either way, the control to stay so still for so long is admirable.

Street Band

Street bands are usually more formal affairs, with often tens of people playing their musical instruments. Because of the fear of rain affecting their performance many street bands perform under a bandshell, which is a stretched canopy, and is effective at keeping the musicians and their instruments dry. A decent street band can draw huge crowds and they are able to play for hours meaning that they can entertain a lot of people over the course of the day.

Mime Artists

Although not as common as they used to be, mime artists are one of the iconic performers of street art. Mime is a discipline that many students learn at drama school and done well it can be extremely entertaining. You do occasionally see mime artists out and about on the streets, with their painted white faces and striped jumpers a seemingly universal uniform.

As you can tell there are many different types of street theatre and artists in a modern city centre, and finding and being entertained by them is easy enough. Just remember to take a bit of loose change as a tip to thank them for entertaining you.
