House Problems you Might Face this Winter

Winter brings us freezing temperatures and miserable weather and this provides us with many common problems, year in year out. Snow and ice are perhaps the main cause of problems; travel becoming extra difficult with rail services cancelled and a general lack of grit meaning that roads become hazardous. Homes are also affected each and every year as a result of the harsh weather that winter brings and it is often the same problems each year. Here are a couple of the major problems that people face each winter.

Mold and Mildew. Mold is a common problem during the winter months as it is generally caused by moisture. The winter brings with it, heavy rain and so areas such as windowsills, basements, closets and even areas in-between the walls can be affected. Mold thrives on humidity and darkness and so places like the bathroom and are often found to have mold. It is important to make sure that your house is free from mold as some can be dangerous, particular if it is left for a long time. It can cause allergies, asthma and stomach upsets and in some cases can be fatal if children are exposed. Check regularly and make sure that fresh air can get into your home.

Frozen pipes and blocked drains. The cold weather can cause problems as often the water running through pipes and can become frozen. If untreated, frozen pipes can burst due to the frozen water inside expanding, and this can be costly. You can check for frozen pipes in a number of ways. You can check them yourselves as well as by checking your water pressure. A low pressure can sometimes be a signal that some of your pipes may be frozen. One way that you can avoid this is by opening cupboards containing pipes and letting some hot air get to them. You can also make sure that they are properly insulated before the winter months. Blocked drains can often occur due to frozen water and this needs to be checked on a regular basis as there can be flooding issues.

Boilers breaking down. Although not always caused by the cold weather during the winter, boilers breaking at this time can be a major issue. If your house is especially cold and your boiler breaks down, you can be left freezing in your own home, obviously something that you don't want to have to endure and something that can be dangerous particularly if you are already ill. It is therefore important that you get your boiler checked for any damages and get any repairs done before it starts to get cold.

These are just a few of the issues that households face each winter but there are many others. One thing that you could do to help prepare for the winter months is get a chartered building surveyor to have a look for anything that may be likely to go wrong or need attention before it starts to get cold. A chartered surveyor will be able to help you find any issues before they arise, therefore keeping you safe and warm this winter.
