Car Care Tips Your Car Will Be Glad You Read

by Tony Hill(5)

On a lazy Saturday morning, the last thing on your mind may well be washing the family car. But don't give in to temptation; the manual drive-through car wash is every car's foe. A careless machine that's set to automated motions could actually harm the finish, leaving scratches or stains that could require additional work to remove. Here is a list of some basic car washing tips and important advice on how not to wash a car; your car will thank you for reading it.

Tip One: Don't leave it too late.

All too often, car owners refuse to wash their car until the body and windows are entirely laden with bird droppings, dead insects and other obvious contaminants that build up on the paint surface. Many of these contaminants, such as bird droppings, have high levels of acidity that, if left on the paint for the duration of a lazy week or two, can eat into the clear coat. If these contaminants are left for long enough, they can leave blemishes on the body that can only be removed by sanding and repainting. Be sure to rinse off this type of debris at the first opportunity.

If it's already too late, then you may consider repainting the affected area. Approach this with caution, however. Be sure to sand down the affected area, removing all dust particles using tack cloths that are compatible with the paint of choice and ensure the paint itself is of good quality and in keeping with the colour of the vehicle. You may need to speak to your car dealership to ensure an accurate match.

Tip Two: Bathe your car for breakfast

Despite the bikini not looking quite so fitting, always wash your car in the morning when the sheet metal is at its coolest. The heat causes the soap and water to dry a lot faster, which dulls the finish. For top results, always hose your car down before washing, and if the neighbours are watching feel free to hose yourself down too for effect. This helps cool the sheet metal and remove loose dirt to ensure an optimum finish.

Tip Three: It's a car, not a china plate

Using a household detergent, such as dish soap or laundry detergent, is one of the most common mistakes car owners make when washing their car. These cleaners are far too strong for use on a car's paint. They strip off the protective wax coat and even dull the finish. Pick up an exceptional car wash formula that is milder than household solutions; these do not affect the wax coat.

Tip Four: Apply the perfume and make up

Rinse the car with a fine spray to remove any excess soap solution. It's important to do remove all soap prior to drying. Dry the vehicle with a quality chamois and treat yourself to a new air freshener and well earned cup of tea.
