How To Clear A Cloudy Pool

Having spent time and money installing and maintaining your pool, it can be a huge disappointment to find that sometimes it's too cloudy to use and no-one wants to go in. Clearing this problem is very often time consuming and troublesome.

To prevent cloudy water, follow our 10 point plan.

1. Make sure to use an Algaecide at the recommended dose rates. Use either a long life Algaecide which is usually applied every six months, or a weekly one, which is cheaper but more time consuming. Algicides are a preventative treatment and should be used before the problem is apparent.

2. Inefficient filtration. It is possible that your filter and or pump are too small for your size pool. Seek advice from a professional and up-grade your equipment as required.

3. Constant backwashing. To a certain extent a filter requires some dirt to remain in the filter. If the sand is too loose, debris can possibly be sent straight through the filter and back in to the water.

4. Unusually busy. Sometimes the pool will be much busier than normal, so the usual dose of chemicals will be insufficient. After the pool has been subject to a very heavy load, shock dose the water.

5. Water too warm. The algae is more encouraged to grow in warm water, which also uses up the chemicals at a faster rate.

6. Be careful to avoid cross contamination of some garden chemicals.

7. Ensure that pH levels are correct. As high pH levels can cause cloudiness, it should be between 7.2 and 7.6 (ideally 7.4).

8. Check Calcium levels. Calcium hardness levels should be between 250 and 600 ppm (ideally 250 ppm).

9. Dirty toys & floats will put a strain on the sanitizer. Make sure that all toys are cleaned off with a hose.

10. Don't let your cleaning routine lapse. Ensure that the pool is regularly brushed and vacuumed.

If the worst happens and you find your wateris still cloudy, then the use of a flocculant may well help. Flocculants work by coagulating together all the very small particles that are in your water. Once bound together these then become heavy and sink to the floor, forming a thin layer that can be vacuumed away. It is best to apply this flocculant at the end of the day, circulate for a few hours and then let the water settle overnight Overnight the floor will become covered in the debris which is now easily removed by vacuuming.
