Responsibilities of a Corporate Paralegal
Many paralegals are employed by corporations. These corporations need paralegals in order to help assist attorneys in creating employee contracts. They also help with benefit plans for their employees as well as typing up fiscal documents, such as end of the year financial reports. When corporations have board meeting, a paralegal is expected to take notes and record them. Corporate paralegals also are supposed to have a good grasp on the law. They can be instrumental in helping corporations stay within legal boundaries and stay current on new laws that may be enacted.
Responsibilities of Paralegals in a Law Firm
In a law firm, paralegals have many responsibilities. As a matter of fact, many of the responsibilities are the same as the lawyers themselves. When an attorney has a paralegal that he or she trusts, they will often delegate many of the responsibilities to that paralegal. Paralegals can investigate, write up legal reports, interview suspects or clients, and draft documents that the attorney needs to prepare his or her case. The only major things that a paralegal in a law firm cannot do are: Setting legal prices, giving legal advice and actually presenting a specific case in court.
Responsibilities of a Paralegal in the Public Sector
Many paralegals are needed for their computer and Internet skills. Most information that corporations and attorneys need is now stores on the Internet. A paralegal that is trained in database technology as well as a keen ability to do Internet-based research is a must. These public paralegals can be hired by a specific company or public office or run their own research business. So much data is required by so many different types of businesses that paralegals have become an invaluable asset.
In conclusion, there are many different reasons for becoming a paralegal. The work is usually hectic, fast-paced, and long. The responsibilities of paralegals have grown as technology has grown. Paralegals can serve as an attorney's best friend, a corporation's go-to person, and a private sector Internet guru.
