Winter Walks in Scotland

There are many different ways in which people like to travel. Some like to go someplace and laze around by the pool whilst others love to get out and explore a place. Some love the luxury of a 4 star resort while others love to stay in small country side inn close to the locals. If you are looking for an adventure and you enjoy knowing a place by communicating with locals, if you want to explore the hidden beauties by the place by foot, then a walking holiday can be ideal for you.

There are plenty of tour operators who organise walking tours throughout the world and in the UK, two very popular destinations are the Great Glen and the West Highland Way.

A 79 mile walk through the Great Glen Way, from Fort William to Inverness via Loch Ness is absolutely fascinating. On the way to Inverness you pass through some of Scotland's most beautiful sights, magical lochs and mountains full of wildlife. There are various different ways to reach Fort William is to take the train journey from Glasgow via Rannoch Moor. It is possibly one the most spectacular rail journeys in Scotland. There are loads of canals, castles, bridges, churches and museums on the way that will take your breath away.

The 95 mile walk in the West Highland Way from Milngavie to Fort William is through some of Scotland's most historic sites. Loch Lomond is a centre for walkers and water sport lovers. It also passes through some of Scotland's most beautiful country side and the Trossachs National Park. The other stunning locations on the ways are Rannoch Moor, Loch Tulla, Bridge Orchy and the Devil's staircase.

Most of the walking tour operators will offer tours to both these location spanning from four to ten days depending on what you want to see. Tours can be personalised according to your needs. They also arrange for all the accommodation, the transit journeys and provide you with all the information related to the place including maps and guidebooks. Don't forget to try the local cuisine and interact with the locals as it is the best way to get to know the place.

It is quite important to prepare yourself for a walking tour as well especially if it is a winter walk. Be prepared to walk for 5 to 6 hours per days and also remember that it will not be easy all the time. Also get familiar with all the equipment that you may use. It is sometime advisable to go for a pre-walk training where they train you to use all the necessary equipment and advise you on what to take with you. Don't forget to research the place online before you go.
