Dreaming In My Bubble Bath

Surrounded by bubbles in my bath the other day, my thoughts drifted back to when I was a little girl.

A very memorable highlight of the week was staying the weekend with my grandparents. Relaxing in my fabulous bath, I thought back to their particular bath room. It was a standard 1950's design, green wall tiles with a yellow linoleum floor. However this was the 1970's so it definitely did seem very old fashioned.

My best memory was of the incredibly deep big tub. Slipping and sliding up and down, I really could create some quite big waves, a miniature tsunami and would only let up once the water had cascaded over the edge of the bath. Oh what fantastic fun all this was!

Gran would come into the bathroom and with a twinkle in her eye, would look affectionately at me and exclaim "having fun, my dear! You are just like your Mum", she reminisced "I can remember the ponds on the floor whenever she made the same type of tidal waves. Make sure to dry well in between your toes!". I was extremely ticklish so Gran made use of this chance to tickle me under my feet amidst squeals of laughter.

Then we would scuttle off to the living room, to keep comfy in front of a roaring fire.

"May I tell you just what bathing was like when I was small?" said Grandpa. I loved to listen to these old tales. I remember seeing a misty far-away look in Grandpa's eyes, when he thought back. "We didn't even have a bathtub in the house" recalled Grandpa. "Our bath day was always Saturday, not every single day like today. My two brothers and I will be sent off to the local village 'bath-house' where we handed in our bucks and given the use of a tub. I must confess, if we had something more fun to do on a Saturday, we wouldn't think twice about skipping the tub. Having fun with your buddies seemed far more exciting. You may possibly question how we got away with this. It was quite easy really. Our mother died when we were quite young so we didn't have anyone to check behind our ears! That was in the early 1900's, so much has changed since then.

"What about you Granny? I asked. "Our family also did not have an indoor bathroom, nor did you will find there's geyser. We used a zinc bath, much like the bath Grandpa and I make use of for bathing Fido outdoors. Winter was freezing so Mum would put the tub in the middle of the kitchen as this was the warmest place in our home. She heated up the big copper kettle above the log fire and poured this water into the tub. I was always so pleased that I was the oldest for the reason that I was first in line for having a bath! My sister then jumped into the same tub of water once I had finished! You're correct Grandpa, so much has changed since those days".

"Oh dear, my water's starting to get cold". With that I was back, relaxing in my wonderful bubble bath once more. I gazed about and really valued all that I had in my recently remodeled bathroom. I am so very happy to have this kind of classy fashionable bathroom - contemporary coordinated taps as well as accessories, stunning sanitary ware. Just what luxury, what an retreat of peace and comfort which is completely my own. Listening to Granny and Grandpa's stories brought back a feeling of being very fortunate to be living in this era of top-quality bathroom know-how.
