Dos and Don'ts of Resume Writing
by Flynn Lambert(3)
Resume writing can be an intimidating process, but once you get the hang of it becomes easier. You must spend quality time to draft your resume. Consider your resume as the blue print to your job search that represents an aspect of you the potential employer will see before even meeting you. It is your formal chance to demonstrate your qualification for the position of interest. There are certain do and don't guidelines you should follow to write an effective resume.
Resumes are typically one page long with an exception for mid-career professionals. A resume should highlight the individuals' most significant achievements, skills and education. State your accomplishments in a manner that will grab the reader and quantify your achievements. For example: Did you increase company profits? State the percentage or dollar amount.
Your resume is not a one size fit all document. Tailor your resume so that it appeals to the position or organization to which the application will be sent. Your content should be brief, to the point and easy to read. Your resume is going to a business where personnel are busy and will not have time to read through elaborate details. Your resume is a summary of your qualifications and details. Avoid over-writing and use sentences that are concise and unambiguous. The information in your resume should be focused on your career goals. In the case of a career change, highlight the transferable skills you possess that will lend support to your new career. Keep it neat. Your resume reflects you and will tell potential employers much about you. If it means spending some extra money then you should do so and have your resume typed, word processed, or printed.
Never include a photograph of yourself in your application. Not only is it unnecessary, but no matter how attractive you are a photograph can work against you. Your resume should not include personal references. You will be asked for references if the company is seriously considering offering you a job. The size and color of the paper you use matters. Avoid papers of odd-sizes and loud colors. Use the standard 81/2x11 inch paper in appropriate colors such as white, beige or buff. Ensure that the paper you use is of good quality.
Never disclose your salary history or reason for leaving previous job(s) in your resume. Issues such as sexual harassment, lawsuits or workers compensation claims should not be disclosed either. Other unnecessary information includes hobbies, musical talent, marital status, number of kids etc. A resume is a business marketing document and should contain information only of a business nature. There is no need to mention your current career goals. Membership and involvement in social organizations are also irrelevant unless they somehow apply to your job objectives.
Writing an effective resume is important, but do not think the resume alone is good enough to land you a job. Bear in mind that while your resume and records will speak highly of you, you are the best representative of yourself.
