Choosing the Right Dress for a Big Night

by Christine Harrell(543) Blue Star

Memorable dresses are immortal. They have the power to live on through the generations. Choosing the right dress is the difference between being remembered with elegance as an icon and being blasted on the year's latest worst-dressed lists. Choosing a dress for the red carpet that sets a precedent and turns heads is a matter of keeping a classic look while considering shape, color, and comfort of the piece.

The dress's silhouette is the most important consideration. The ideal dress will properly flatter the body that's wearing it. Body shape will determine the best options for dress shape. Classic shapes like floor-length, for example, never go out of style, and there's a reason that they are so popular. They are the most flattering styles. Floor length is always appropriate for the red carpet as it is formal and elegant. Consider combining the classic long length with a timeless top for a winning look. Sweetheart tops and empire waists are both recurring fashion trends that have yet to look dated. Choose a practical and flattering shape over an edgy one if necessary.

Trends come and go in the wildest colors. Ladies preparing for a night with paparazzi should avoid being peer pressured into "the new black." Color trends are not dictated by what looks the best on everyone, so smartly stylish ladies will remember to pick colors that look good against their skin and hair. For example, wearing a tangerine-color dress is bold for everyone, but it's not a positive look for everyone. Black and white are just as powerful as colors on the red carpet. If bright colors seem too risky, black dresses in long length, are go-to formal styles that work well anytime. Black, charcoal, ivory, off-white and white are chic choices for a dressy occasion. Colorful blends are also in style.

Formalwear is notorious for being hard to wear and uncomfortable, but suffering through an important night is out of style. Dresses that need constant adjustment should never be considered for red carpet dresses. Also eliminate any dresses that don't allow the normal range of motion needed to get through the night. Walking is important. Being able to pick something up is also good. Ladies on the red carpet will have a better time if they aren't worried about keeping themselves covered every time they change positions. Being able to easily walk down the red carpet without a wardrobe malfunction should be a given.

When it comes to big nights, nothing is more important than getting back to basics and picking a dress that is classic in shape, flattering in color, and comfortable to celebrate in.
