If you experience frequent heartburn you have probably started researching what foods help with symptoms and in the process have come across a large list of possible culprits.
You could be forgiven for thinking that life with acid reflux will be a little on the boring side, certainly as far as your diet is concerned.
Read up on acid reflux in any magazine or newspaper and all they seem to be telling you is to cut out all your favorite foods and drinks, eat bland, low fat, low calorie foods with no taste and whatever you do…..don't drink alcohol or caffeine.
GERD - Acid reflux disease, call it what you want, will disrupt your life. That is without doubt.
Constant heartburn and acid indigestion wears you out, is tiresome and just plain uncomfortable. After a while you feel that you are willing to try almost anything to stop your suffering.
But….before you stop eating all your favorite things, do two things. Change your lifestyle Do your research
Lifestyle
Most of us, if we're honest have bad habits that we have developed thoughout our lives and some of them are bad habits that will help to aggravate heartburn.
Why do you think that acid reflux disease is prevalent in the over forties? We've had longer to develop the bad habits.
Do you eat too quickly? - try slowing down - You will improve your digestion and probably eat less into the bargain, both will help with acid reflux.
Do you eat too much? - small regular meals are better than large gut busting meals
How much alcohol do you drink? - Alcoholic drinks relax the sphincter muscle at the top of your stomach and contributes to acid reflux.
Do you eat late at night? - Try not to eat within three hours of going to bed. It will help with heartburn and also help with weight.
Overweight - Diet. Carrying extra weight is a major contributor to acid reflux as fat stored around your internal organs puts pressure on your stomach, and it's doing the same to your heart!!
Love junk food? That was a question not a command. If so, try to eat less of it. Fresh is best where heartburn is concerned.
Do Your Research?
When you read the long list of foods to avoid for heartburn you might well panic. Don't. It is only a list of suspects that may cause heartburn or acid reflux. Just because it's on the list doesn't mean that you mustn't eat it.
Keep a food diary! Each time that you experience heartburn, write down what you had to eat before it started. It's also worth noting what you were doing just before you got heartburn. Lie down shortly after a meal and whatever you have eaten will cause heartburn. Bend over and compress your stomach - and you will get acid reflux. Exercise after eating - and you develop acid indigestion.
