Pizza is probably the country's worst food. Not only is it high in calories, portion control is just about absent. Adding to the problem is its easy to buy, inexpensive and very pleasing to most of us. In addition pizza is fun to eat, especially for families. Every one sits around a table taking a piece or two. There is no cooking for the mother and all you need to do is to pick up the phone to purchase it. The average American eats 46 slices of pizza a year which can result in a 7 lb. weight gain. If you eat 3 slices of pizza just once a week, you can easily gain 15 or 20 pounds over a year. Pizza is much more dangerous than most people think.
One slice of Pizza Hut 12-inch pizza with pepperoni has 580 calories. Calories and fat grams per slice vary widely among the various chains. For example, a single slice of pizza provides anywhere from 170 calories for Pizza Hut's Thin n' Crispy Veggie Lover's pizza to 570 calories for their Big New Yorker Sausage pizza. The calories in one slice of Little Caesar's Round pizza vary from 190 for their Veggie pizza to 230 for their Supreme. If you check Pizza Hut's web site, the average slice of pizza is about 400 calories, with a range of 380 to 620. The personal pan pizzas range from 670 to 890 calories. While many consumers would not eat more than one Big Mac or Whopper, many individuals don't think twice about eating a second, third or fourth slice of pizza. Ordering large amounts of very high calorie food is not unusual, in fact it's the norm. You are encouraged to order more than one. A recent Domino's ad featured, "order two pizzas get the 3rd for free." Pizza is attractive to many people for these reasons. For working couples it often becomes the meal of choice beacuse of its convenience and relatively low price. A family of four can easily be fed with a $12.00 pizza. Add the advantage of not having to cook anything and you has a winner.
How to Make Pizza Healthy: Prepare it yourself : using low fat cheese, minimal oil and lots of vegetables and no meat. Buy the "right one" look for the lower calorie choices, its all on the web sites. Watch the toppings: no meats, more vegetables, ask for half cheese Buy a smaller pizza: most people count slices of pizza and ignore the actual size. "Dilute" the pizza with sides of salads vegetables so pizza is not the only thing on the dinner menu.
