Why Adults Are Important On A Playground

It is critical that playgrounds are safe for children to play on. On an elementary school yard, it is critical that all students are under good supervision at all times. Anything can go on, and a student can be injured quite easily. This can usually be unavoidable. As long as children are watched and following the rules, they should stay relatively safe. Children will be able to enjoy themselves with few to no worries.

It is not odd to see small injuries on most playgrounds. 10 percent of playground injuries, though, need emergency services and help. Lack of supervisors is the common cause in many injuries, making it even more important for you and your staff to be proactive. Teachers need to explain to kids all the rules as well as enforce them. If a kid is not playing within the rules, you should punish them and bench them so that they cannot play. Let the students have fun but don’t worry about being overly cautious.

Make sure that your staff is trained in safety for playgrounds. Pass out safety handbooks that explain rules and tips for emergency scenarios. Your playground set supervisors need to learn how to stay aware, calm, and consistent in their reprimanding. This will help them see inappropriate games and behavior around dangerous school equipment. Schools will want to be sure there are adequate supervisors for the size of playground and number of children. It is a wise idea to close off any area of the playground that cannot be watched. You will surely keep your injury numbers down by doing all of this.

You want to avoid court as best as possible. Lawsuits are typical when schools are lacking supervision. Schools receive lawsuits normally after a severe injury has occurred. This is the most typical reason parents sue. The lawsuit will normally try to say that there was little or no supervision. Being proactive is one of the smartest ways to ensure safety and stop lawsuits from happening.

Every kid deserves to have fun on a safe playground. It is their time to have fun, enjoy the fresh air, and get some exercise. Kids can’t always be relied on to follow the rules. This is where teachers need to come in and be the adults. Your role is to keep them safe. If your school does not have a playground supervisor program, speak to your county school board or find out how you can create one. They must be provided with the training necessary to keep kids safe.
