Gout can affect many people, but it seems to affect more men than women. Most men will get their first experience with gout between the ages of forty and fifty. Women are more likely to get their first experience with gout after the age of fifty. This doesn't mean that you can't get gout if you're thirty or forty. Gout is a tricky condition and can affect anyone. If someone in your family has gout it is likely that you could develop gout as well. It's pretty rare that children get gout.
Gout is diagnosed by a physician. Some doctors find it difficult to diagnose gout because the symptoms of gout are similar to other conditions. If you have gone to the doctor and your joints are swollen the doctor may take a sample of the fluid in your joints to see if there are uric acid crystals present. He will have to do this under the microscope. You won't be able to see this with the naked eye.
The doctor will probably order some blood tests. The blood test can show how much uric acid is in your blood. This is the most common way that a doctor will know and test you. He will know the results of your blood test in just a couple of days and will be able to let you know if you have gout or something else. He will probably prescribe you an anti-inflammatory prescription to help the joints being inflamed. He may even prescribe you some kind of pain reliever because the pain is so severe you will want some relief. Don't be afraid to ask your doctor for this. There is no need to be in pain until you get your test results back.
If your test results come back and indeed you have high levels of uric acid, then more than likely you have gout. Gout is treatable and you will be able to live a normal life. You will basically just have to watch your diet. You will have to avoid high uric acid foods, these are foods with high levels of purines. Foods high in purines contribute to your uric acid. You will also have to cut out those sweets and alcohol. Don't think you won't be able to ever have these. Until you get your gout under control and you know what makes your gout reoccur stick to the gout diet. Then occasionally have these in moderation.
Gout is more common now than it used to be. There is a lot of information out there about different ways to help you lower uric acid and the various drugs for gout. You can do this. The more knowledge you gain about gout the easier it will get.
