Is Dial Up Internet Still Used?
by Katy Quinn(12)
With the current advances in broadband Internet technology most people have forgotten about how important dial up internet truly is. Although outdated, dial up internet still has some benefits.
Due to the fact that user requirements were very simple when the interent was just starting out there wasnt much call for super fast connection speeds. However, as user demand changed so did the way the interent was delivered. Due the bottlenecks that come with dial up internet it is hard to access music and videos which is something that does not present a problem when using broadband internet.
Before DSL and Cable become common in most households the only way to access the Internet was using dial up and that technology went through a major overhaul. The story started with a 9800 baud modem and then later moved on to 28.8kb/s which was new technology and at its peak managed 56kb/s.
What made dial up internet so attractive was the relative convenience in which most consumers could access it. By using the existing telephone infrastructure a person could use these copper wires to connect remotely to a server and access the internet.
Copper wires caused quite a great deal of electromagnetic interference which posed a challenge. This meant a great deal of frustration amongst those who lived in rural areas as there was problems with connections and the speed of these connections.
After a government intervention, DSL and Cable services became more widespread and mainstream. In order to create a faster more reliable service, these methods used the existing infrastructure but also used higher frequencies which meant more data could be transferred.
Dial up internet is still used, although by the minority. There are number of things one can do to make their dial up internet faster and more reliable. Try to limit the number of tabs that are open in a browser. Each browser tab will consume come bandwidth in order to stay connected to the net. It is also a good idea to make sure the line you use for your internet is not shared with a telephone line. Call waiting amongst other features with a telephone service might create interference that will have a direct impact on a person online experience limiting their connection speed.
