Preparing For A Third Party Audit

by Austin Cox(2)

Preparing your facility for a third party audit can be grueling and stressful, as some pest issues can cause an automatic failure.  When it comes to these types of audits, preparation and proper record keeping is vital.  What can you do to help your company pass an inspection? Follow these suggestions, and be sure to improve your chances of a successful audit.

When preparing for an audit, it is important that you follow any and all recommendations made by your pest control company.  Pest conducive conditions, such as poorly sealed doors, poor storage practices, or neglected sanitation issues, should be addressed immediately to avoid pest problems and a possible point deduction by an auditor.  Review past service records and make sure that all problems were addressed, and all recommendations were carried out.  Great communication between you and your pest control specialist is paramount to a successful audit; contact your specialist to clear up any issues or questions that you may have.

When it comes to serious pest problems, leave it to the professionals.  Shared programs may appear cost effective, but can be a source of confusion for the auditor. Many times with shared programs, record keeping and documentation are compromised at the plant level resulting in lost points or even audit failure.

Some common issues that create problems for facilities during an audit include roll up and man doors that need to be shut or screened, and maintaining an 18 inch clearance along walls. Check for these problems before the auditor visits your facility. Correcting these conditions before an audit can prevent headaches for you later.

The most important thing to remember is to be audit-ready every day.  Make sanitation and structural maintenance a daily habit.  Being audit-ready every day will reduce strains on manpower and reduce stress in the days leading up to your audit.
