Tired of your current job? Looking for a new career path? Then why not consider becoming a chartered building surveyor. Building surveying as a job, has been around since the 1970's and today it is one of the broadest areas of surveying practise. It is one of the most interesting, diverse and highly rewarding jobs around and highly worth considering when choosing your career path.

A building surveyor's role will mean that they deal with a wide range of services. They will offer advice on many different aspects of design and construction, including repairs and refurbishment of existing buildings, maintenance as well as the restoration of buildings. They deal with finding potential issues with buildings, essential for someone who is looking to purchase a property for a new home or a large building for a business, as it can prevent buying somewhere that needs a lot of work. They will also be able to assess and give advice on the feasibility of a building project as well as helping with any party wall issues. The role can also involve working alongside drawing up detailed plans for building work. The role simply means that you will always be busy, that there will never be a dull moment.

There are plenty of good reasons to become a chartered building surveyor and here are just a few:

According to the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, the job is one that has stability. They state that demand currently exceeds supply and that this is forecast to continue. This would mean that it should be relatively easy to find and to continue to find work, something which is particularly difficult in the current economic climate.

The work means that you travel a lot and that you combine a mixture of office based work with working outdoors. Many people feel restricted in their job and this simply isn't the case with building surveyors. Mixing up your working environment can help you to remain happy as you will be visiting new places regularly and won't just be sitting at the same desk each day.

The role is one that requires a number of skills and means that you have a lot of responsibility for a number of different areas. As a result, the pay reflects this. Building surveyors earn a decent wage whist chartered building surveyors can earn considerably more. Salaries can start as high as 24,000 pounds and can quickly rise to about 45,000 pounds within 5 years. People who go on to become directors and partners can even earn six figure sums.

So, when looking for your next role or perhaps when you are thinking of a career path, why not become a chartered building surveyor. You could take a relevant degree such as surveying or construction although you can become a building surveyor without a degree. You can become qualified through on the job experience as well as by taking relevant courses. You may want to start as a trainee and gain your qualifications part time. This way you will have experience as well as becoming qualified.
