Christmas for Rat-Race Moms

For those of you who celebrate it, it's Christmas week - hurrah. Excitement abounds in our house with one very excited 3 year old, who is taking it all in this year. It's so amazing how they think about it all and some of the questions that are asked. I'm using it as a great excuse to behave like a child once again and to totally submerse myself in the wonder of Christmas.
Given its Christmas week I'm going to keep this short and sweet with one thought - are you all set for Christmas? Maybe or maybe not. Either way, take it as it is. Be happy with how you have things and make a promise to yourself now that next year you will push your boundaries farther and get more pieces of your ideal Christmas in place.
To explain a bit more what I mean I'll use my own situation, last year for me was a pretty big disaster when it comes to Christmas - we had to move out of our house for 2 weeks as our heating broke. We moved in with family for that time and all slept in one room. My son and I were very ill for about 10 days of that and he had no interest in his Christmas presents or anybody except me - as they do when they are sick. My daughter was just 8 weeks old and going through a really unsettled phase and screamed the house down for most of that time and my husband was working away. To say I was near my wits end was too true!
So this Christmas, onwards and upwards - there is a pretty high chance that it will be better. So far the weather is milder and we are in our own house - for this one thing alone I am sooo grateful. I have my cards done, to let all the people close to me know that I am thinking about them. Cooking-wise I am keeping it all pretty simple but delicious. Most importantly for me, I will spend Christmas day with my family and enjoy all that it brings.
I don't yet have everything exactly how I would like it. So next year I would like to put lights outside the house, I would like to decorate inside more and make my own Christmas pudding and mince pies. But each year I feel happy with where I have reached this year and promise myself to stretch myself next year to get nearer to my idyllic Christmas.
With small kids you need to be realistic as to what you can do. They need a lot of your attention and if you are reading this blog, then that more than likely is a priority for you. So when you are with them, be really with them in heart and soul. Don't be thinking about all that you have to do. All they want is you; they won't notice all the things that you feel you have to do. They simply want you to be there to share the experience with them.
So take where you are at, go easy on yourself, use this time to really relax and unwind and truly enjoy the precious time you have with your family.
