There a lot of people that call them self a contractor. In realty there is much need it to be a contractor than just to have a crew and tools. Be aware of any one who comes to your door soliciting work. Most reputable contractors do not sell their services door-to-door, though they sometimes distribute flayer.
If you encounter one of this "contractor", and if you have the time, take a few minutes and hear them. At any sign of discrepancy just let them know you are not interested. If they leave you any information and you want to give them the opportunity; research them online, take your time and call references, and most important do not rush the decision.

• An active member of associations. An example of this is the Best Business Bureau. They keep a record of any fraudulent company and reported nationwide. If a company is in good standing in the BBB it could be consider a reputable company.
• Has a local number and is answers with the company name. The person that answers the phone should be able to respond to any questions you might have. Some local roofer can have Toll-Free numbers and this is to help owner from surrounded areas reach them better. Call both number.
• knows about building codes and permits. Depending in the area where you live, the contractor should know if there is a permit requirement and the necessary building codes to perform a reroof or roof repair.
• Finally, and most important, the roofing company should be able to communicate with insurance companies. They will cover all the cost until the insurance claim gets settle.
All of this point may sound silly but keep in mind that id the company your are planning to hire has, if not all, most of the above it is a reputable company. Be in the look out and do not any one scam you.
