According to a recent survey, Indians were found to work for more than 8.1 hours per day, a figure greater than the entire developed world especially in first tier countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, France, Italy and Germany.
The number of work hours though registered by Indians is lower compared to workers in the United States, China and Japan. Topping the list are Mexican workers as they work the most number of hours per day.
The survey was undertaken by the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development and the group said, "Mexicans work longer days than anyone else in OECD countries, devoting ten hours to paid and unpaid work, such as cleaning or cooking at home."
The average number of hours of work for OECD nations amounts to eight hours per day, a little below how much Indian workers perform daily tasks amounting to 8.1 hours. Japan totals nine hours as the second longest work hours while Belgium ranks last with just 7.1 hours. The volume of work is both paid and non-paid work.
For unpaid work, Mexicans log in three hours per day while Koreans do the least amount with just an hour and nineteen minutes of work. Indians on the other hand spend 191 minutes per day or nearly 3.2 hours on unpaid work while paid work is about five hours per day.
The unpaid work involves cooking and household chores, with Americans doing the least amount of time at half an hour at most per day while Turkish people spend the most time at nearly one hour and fifteen minutes per day. The worldwide average for daily cooking time is around fifty minutes per day.
Shopping is also another aspect of unpaid work. Many OECD populations spend about twenty-three minutes per day shopping while the French people spend about thirty-two minutes per day and Koreans spend only thirteen minutes per day for this household chore.
In work time figures, Mexicans log in 594 minutes per day, Japanese spend 540 minutes per day, 504 minutes for Chinese, New Zealanders log in 498 minutes and Americans work for 496 minutes per day. Koreans work for 484 minutes, Australians for 481 minutes, 474 minutes for Italians, Brits work for 473 minutes, 451 minutes in Finland, French people work 448 hours, Germans work for 445 minutes and Belgians work for 427 minutes.
Overall, the OECD found that the value of unpaid work is considerable and amounts to nearly one-third of the GDP of OECD countries. The highest value is 53 per cent in Portugal and Korea has the lowest at 19 percent.
