A Guide to Gauges and Valves

by Tony Hill(5)

Recently I've been looking into engineering processes and have found an incredibly complex and confusing set of terms, descriptions and names being used. Any normal person would find the whole process near on impossible to understand. To help, I've put together a few descriptions of terms and items I've come across (not necessarily all linked!) to help clarify both in my mind and yours, what they are...

Valve: let's start simple. A valve is a device that regulates, directs or controls the flow of a fluid. This can be done by opening and closing to allow/deny pathways for various fluids. A gauge, meanwhile, is an instrument or device that measures something; whether that be content or magnitude.

some gauges are used to measure the level of different types of fluid. A magnetic level gauge includes a device that can float both in different variations of liquid density; whether that is low or high.

Magnetic level gauges can also be designed to accommodate very high and very low temperatures whether that liquid is very hot or very cold.

Control valves are a seemingly more complex contraption than what I have described above. Control valves are, as opposed to a level gauge, are used to control loads of liquid conditions such as flow, pressure, temperature, and liquid level. They are often controlled to open or close to affect the aspects mentioned above and are triggered by a sensor.

Essentially, these items are used for increased efficiency across many different industries including Health, Pharmaceutical, Food, Industrial and manufacturing industries. Many of the items mentioned really can help with anything from process temperature to pressure of domestic hot water.

As well as the obvious cost savings, valves and gauges improve the accuracy of processes and save energy, acting as a result of both sensor and manual controls. Of course, this is vitally important for so many businesses like private and public hospitals - where costs are an integral part of business strategy.

Some of the items are used by professions such as engineers, whilst some providers claim that their products almost make such expertise unnecessary; therefore reducing staffing costs for building and building maintenance. Whether this is true, is another matter bur undoubtedly these instruments are vitally important to the construction of the landscape around us. In addition, it has highlighted to me just how complex such solutions are and how vitally they are needed not only in this country but also abroad.
