What Does Haltwhistle Have To Offer?
by Mark Benson(329)
Haltwhistle has become one of the major tourist attractions in the North of England and once you sample the scenery, history and in particular the Roman Wall you will soon understand why it is so popular. So where is Haltwhistle and what does it really have to offer?
Background to Haltwhistle
Many people will have come across the town of Haltwhistle due to the ongoing dispute regarding which particular town is the Centre of Britain. There are a number of towns across the UK which are vying for this position although the vast majority of people seem to agree that Haltwhistle has a very strong case in this particular argument. Haltwhistle is also the highest market town in the UK although very few people will probably be aware of this.
What does Haltwhistle have to offer?
There are many different reasons why people are flocking towards Haltwhistle which include: -
Commuting to Newcastle
Newcastle is one of the business centres of the north-east and the very fact that Haltwhistle is just 35 miles from Newcastle has made it a very popular area amongst those looking to commute to work. Not only can you take advantage of the beautiful countryside and the history associated with Haltwhistle but house prices are significantly lower in Haltwhistle than they are in the Newcastle area.
Commuting to Carlisle
While Carlisle is nowhere near as influential a business centre as Newcastle is to the north-east, there is no doubt that Carlisle does have a presence in the Northwest business arena. The very fact it is only 21 miles from Haltwhistle has again made the area very popular with commuters willing to take advantage of significantly lower house prices in the region.
The Roman Wall
The Roman Wall was built back in A.D. 122 by the Emperor Hadrian and while there is some dispute as to exactly why the wall was built there is no doubt that it is now the focal point of the Haltwhistle area. The various historical locations along the wall have literally brought in millions upon millions of tourists from around the UK and around the world. Hadrian's Wall is also officially recognised as a World Heritage Site and as such has attracted significant investment from a number of public bodies.
Schools around the north-east of England have for many years now being organising day trips for their pupils to take advantage of the local history and the history of the UK. Even the merest of the glimpses at the remains of the Roman Wall show how amazing a job was done by the Romans as there are still great swathes of the wall visible today.
Conclusion
Accommodation in Haltwhistle is now a very competitive market and when you bear in mind the ever growing number of tourists flocking to the region this is no surprise. It is the natural beauty of the local countryside, the relatively short distances to Newcastle and Carlisle and not to mention the famous Hadrian's Wall which is one of the U.K.'s best tourist attractions. It is also interesting to see that the local authorities have been investing time and money into the tourist industry as they look to take advantage of the benefits to the local population and the local economy.
