The tuxedo is probably the most formal wear for men. The tuxedo, often referred to as a dinner suit or dinner jacket, is a semi-formal suit, typically black or dark blue and generally worn with a formal dress shirt, formal shoes amongst other accessories. This type of formal wear is suitable for many occasions from wedding to social events such as a show screening. Since there are different colour combinations possible and a huge amount of accessories which can be added, there is often confusion about what type of tuxedo to wear to a certain event. This article offers some useful formal wear tips for men and more specifically how and when to wear a tuxedo.

What is a tuxedo?

A tuxedo consists of two parts, usually black tuxedo trousers and a black tuxedo jacket. A white tuxedo or white tuxedo jacket is almost exclusively worn at events which take place in tropical countries. When attending an event in the Netherlands, you are generally advised to wear a woolen tuxedo in darker colours.

When to wear a tuxedo?

The tuxedo is especially suitable on the following occasions:

• An event that is promoted as formal, black tie or black tie optional

• A formal dinner or reception

• A show screening, ballet or musical performance

• A prom or formal dance event

Black-tie

The traditional components for men's black tie attire are:

• A black tuxedo jacket, usually single-breasted, black or midnight blue and preferably made of polyester or wool.

• A white tuxedo dress shirt. There are different types of formal dress shirts to choose from. Black tie usually includes a wing collar or long point collar dress shirt, but the standard collar, pleated front dress shirt is also suitable.

• A black bow tie, which can be pre-tied or self-tie. While pre-tied bow ties didn't meet the black tie dress code in the past, they are advised these days since they save you time and a bow tie is generally hard to tie yourself.

• Formal dress shoes. Under a black tuxedo you are advised to wear black patent shoes and black silk socks.

Several accessories can also be added to make sure you are looking your best for any formal occasion:

• A cummerbund - around the waist - a white chest pocket handkerchief and double cufflinks.

• Wearing a watch is on the other hand advised against when attending a black-tie event. After all, it is rather impolite to constantly check the time.

Keep it simple

Finally, a last important formal wear tip: choose sober and dark colour tones. Simplicity is traditionally considered to be most appropriate on formal occasions.
