What Is A FireWire Hub?
by Mark Benson(319)
There have been some major advances in computer technology over the last few years and the introduction of FireWire Hubs is something which has certainly caught the attention of many computer users. However, what is a FireWire Hub and what use can it be to you on an everyday basis?
Computer protocols
The FireWire Hub is directly connected to the IEEE 1394 protocol which covers the linking of various interface devices to a computer. These can be USB ports or simply allow users to connect different devices to their computers. The device can also become an integral part of a local area network allowing you to link together a number of different computers into their own private network.
The IEEE 1394 protocol
In other to get the most out of your FireWire Hub, and indeed to allow you to connect your FireWire Hub to your computer, you will need an IEEE 1394 port. The vast majority of computers today will have a relevant port to allow you to connect a FireWire Hub but there are still some older machines on the market which do not have a direct IEEE 1394 port.
Connecting your FireWire Hub without an IEEE 1394 port
The introduction of expansion cards and the very simple way in which you can add these to your computer today has gone a long way towards helping everybody have access to a FireWire Hub. All you need to do is slot in the IEEE 1394 port expansion card, as you would any other card on your motherboard, and this will allow an extended number of IEEE 1394 devices to be connected to your computer.
Historically many people may have been concerned about adding new cards to their motherboards but the situation has been very much simplified over the last few years. It is literally a case of unscrewing the top of your computer and slotting in the relevant card in the designated place. It really is as simple as that.
Benefits of a FireWire Hub
The benefits of a FireWire device are more keenly felt in the current computer environment with many people having multiple devices which they would like to connect to their computer at any one time. The introduction of this new connectivity option will allow you to add additional devices to your computer via a number of different routes. As we touched on above, it will also allow you to create your very own local area network which can ensure that any information is available to a range of computers pre-chosen by you.
FireWire Hubs today are available for just a few hundred pounds and they can literally change the look, feel and power of your computer and your computer network in an instant. We all have various devices which we would like to have connected to a computer at any one time and very often we need to disconnect one to connect another. Using your very own FireWire Hub this choice and this situation will be very much a thing of the past.
