Turning away from the Tree of Knowledge

by Roxan Weir

My family always believed in going to church, consequently I was a Sunday school child, learning my bible verses and singing my songs about Jesus loving the little children.  As a child they teach you that God is love, God sent his son Jesus down from heaven to save us all from our sins.  We were all born into sin, ever since Adam and Eve ate the apple and left the garden.

The Tree of Knowledge, that is what they called the tree from which the forbidden fruit was taken.  As a child I thought Adam and Eve's story was meant to teach the consequence of disobedience since they were banished from the garden of Eden and bound for pain and suffering.

But I never really understood what was bad about eating that apple.  Indeed I thought God had a touch of cruelty to him.  Why offer them everything in the garden except that one tree?  Why put temptation in their way and then punish when they fail?  Every time I asked about this part, they told me "its God's way of testing his children"

It makes sense to put yourself in the way of temptation, if you resist, your resolve will be strengthened.  Eve would have had to overcome the urge to "know," her urge to be informed about herself and the life she was living.  The real question here I guess is how many of us can resist the "knowing?"  Who can walk away from the Tree of Knowledge?

The only way to truly walk with God is to forget everything we know about this life, and live the example of life that Jesus Christ set before us when He came down to earth.  Eve only had a beautiful garden with fruit laden trees; We have money and science and technological advances.  Who among us can truly walk away from the "knowing" we have accumulated over the centuries after we came out of Eden?
