Britain is often overlooked by holiday makers, mainly as people want to spend their holiday in the sun and get away from the unpredictable weather, but England is truly one of the most interesting and insightful places to take a holiday. Rich in history, England has everything that you need; quaint villages, bustling cities, an array of pubs, clubs and bars ,sandy beaches, monumental landmarks and not forgetting the acres and acres of beautiful countryside, so why not look right here, on your very own doorstep when choosing your next holiday destination.
Walking holidays are a fantastic way to explore the wonders that England has to offer. They allow you to visit England's hidden treasures whilst experiencing what England is all about. Depending on which walk you choose to undertake, you might find yourself wandering through glorious countryside taking in all of the wonders of British nature, or perhaps you might choose to walk along one of England's chalky coasts taking in the fantastic views, either way, you are bound to come across one of the many ancient villages and encounter a typical English pub, allowing you to discover the true essence of England.
One of the most popular walks in England is the coast to coast walk, devised in 1973 by Alfred Wainwright and estimated to be around 190 miles long. The walk takes you from the shores of the Irish Sea in West Cumbria, normally at St Bees, all the way along to the coastline at the North Sea in Robins Hood Bay, Yorkshire. The walk can be described as more of an adventure than a walk as you pass through three widely diverse national parks. Of course, if you wanted to, you could divert your route slightly and further explore the national parks, each with their own unique attractions.
The Lake Districts National Park allows you to experience some of England's greatest sights. You will be able to gaze at Scafell Pike, England's highest mountain and for those brave enough you can even attempt to climb it and experience the extensive views. You will also find Wastwater, the deepest lake in England whilst also visiting one of the many villages and towns that the Lake District has to offer.
The Yorkshire Dales National Park is home to some of the most picturesque waterfalls that Britain has to offer. The Aysgarth Falls sees the River Ure descend through a series of stepped waterfalls. The river is rife with wildlife and you will often see fisherman trying to catch some trout or grayling or one of the many different types of birds that frequent the river searching for its supper. If you wanted to you could also visit the Ingleton Waterfalls trail, another stunning trail of waterfalls.
The North York Moore National Park is home to different castles as well as a large number of spectacular looking abbeys and priory's, some of which are fantastically well preserved ruins. Of course there is also a large amount of countryside to explore as well as well as some sandy beaches.
Of course there are many other walks and trails across England and you can find the one most suited to your desires by searching online. Walking in England is a great way to keep fit and healthy as well as a fantastic opportunity to explore the country, so why not choose a walking holiday as your next getaway.
