A PC to TV cable can come in a variety of different forms. The problem is that the cable has to take information coming out of your computer, and put it into a type that your PC can read. The type of information coming out of your computer will often be in a video format like VGA. Many televisions, especially if they're older, won't have this. That means that you need a cable that translates the VGA signal into something more TV friendly. Otherwise the operation won't work and you won't be able to see anything.
A PC to TV cable that is common is VGA to HDMI for high definition televisions. The only problem with this type of cable is that it won't give audio information to your television. So you'll be able to watch high definition video, but you won't hear any of the sounds. In this case, you can do something like use speakers directly from your computer. The sound will come from your computer, but the video will come from your television. You can even set it up so that the speakers are around your television, so you won't even notice the difference.
Another example of a PC to TV cable is something that uses a different source such as SVGA. Some cables may use DVI as well. It's more ideal if you can use a type of video that carries both audio and visual information from the computer to the television. This means using a type from both the PC and television sides that can do this. In some cases you may be able to plug your computer directly into your television. Many modern televisions will actually have a port of the right type for computers, such as VGA.
If you don't want to actually watch anything on your computer directly, you can use a PC to TV cable that is of a different variety. For example, USB cables can carry data from your computer to your television. In some cases, your television might actually have the port it needs to receive this information directly. This will be a USB port in most cases. You can check directly behind your television to check to see if your television has this or not. It will look exactly like the USB port on your computer. This can certainly be a convenient way to use a computer directly on a TV.
