The Value Of Video On The Net - Illustrated Through Golf Videos

by Jeffery Nevil(133) Red Star

Video on the web has become an immensely rich part of the way we surf. Gone are the days when we had to wade through swathes of information and try to decipher the piece of information that we actually wanted. It's much easier now, with the advent of higher connection speeds, to straightforwardly put video on to the internet, and construct them with a finesse that succinctly defines the purpose of the website you are on. It can be advertorial, but it will most likely be informational too. There are so many different kinds and they really overlap. News, entertainment, promotions, advertisements, education or even inspirational videos feature all over the net.

So let's say you have an interest in golf. There are a lot of possibilities in finding golf videos on the internet. Golf is a professional sport, obviously, so there is a lot of coverage of the activity. Most golfing websites out there won't be licensed to actually broadcast golf events, particularly in the upper echelons, but there is certainly a rich area of golf highlights from the various tournaments that take place around the world on an annual basis. It's not the same as being live, but golfing videos are there for a wide variety of reasons. It could just be memorable moments from a tournament, a hole in one or particularly long shot might be classed as a memorable moment for example. These exist not as coverage, but primarily as entertainment. It's advertorial in a sense too. Memorable moments such as a hole in one are a good advertisement for the sport in general because it highlights the exciting moments of a game of golf and encourages both viewership and potential participation as a hobby. So we can see the fluid nature of video on the internet, which doesn't necessarily fit the broad definitions of video in other arenas.

There is another aspect of entertainment in golf videos unrelated to the actual sport itself. Often videos will spend some time visiting and interviewing a known proponent of whatever the website in question is interested in. This could be a formal sit down interview, in relation to golf this could be an interview with a golfer prior to a tournament they are participating in or a one they have just participated in. This is entertainment on an informational level, so it's another example of the multilayered nature of video on the web. It could be an informal interview however. This is more obviously entertainment, though there is some evidence of informative or journalistic content here. An example might be spending some time with a golfer at their home, a sort of home tour, or an informal chat whilst going around a mini-golf course. It really depends, but entertainment can overlap with the informative and advertorial too.

Educational and instructional videos might be very commonplace on websites featuring golfing videos. Tips on how to swing correctly, perhaps given by a professional golfer, will be instructional but also entertainment. In a sense, for the player and the sport in general, such a video could be considered advertorial as well.

There's a whole ream of video content on the internet, and we've established the overlapping nature of the different types of video in relation to what they are intended for. So, hopefully you have a better understanding of the value of video on the internet, as well as what it is used for and how it is used too.
