Medical Institutions are required to provide a clearly define scope of practice of a clinical laboratory technologist, a medical laboratory assistant and medical laboratory technician. The scope of practice includes the duties and responsibilities, defined criteria and activities that a health practitioner assumes while on the job. The laboratory technologist, assistant and technicians are all equipped with diverse knowledge, skills and experiences as they join and work in a clinical laboratory. The scope of practice is geared towards effective collaboration and good working relationships between them and other health professionals.

Medical Professions like doctors, nurses, dentists, laboratory technologists, pharmacists and other health care professions are regulated to ensure excellent performance and quality standard services. The results obtained are guaranteed accurate when done by a licensed professional. Regulations can reduce errors on the job as professionals are guided by Code of Ethics.
Scope of Practice
A registered medical laboratory technologist performs according to his or her duty statements. The job is to collect samples from the human body. Process or examine, and then evaluate the specimen with utmost care. The procedure is done for the purpose of medical investigation and clinical trials. The scope of practice statement of a laboratory technologist has 3 aspects such as breadth, depth and focus. The breadth refers to the range or to what extent the lab technologist has to perform the specified tasks of collecting, recording, sorting, preparing and processing sample or specimen involve in the study. Like for instance, he or she could perform microscopic examination in hematology for screening but the review and reporting can be done by a pathologist. The focus means the subject or target involved in the task such as the patient, clinical research coordinator, clinical research associate and other health professionals. In this case, the laboratory technologist is a part of the investigating team. There is more of patient contact and careful handling of the case. Finally, the depth which means the complexity of service as provided. Clinical trials are usually performed to investigate clinical cases and tremendous amount of research, pre and post analysis, tests are required. The task includes inventory control, equipment or apparatus control and quality control. The samples or specimen, records of results and trials and other documents have to be kept and inventory is required. The maintenance of equipment or daily set-up is done by the laboratory technologist so as to ensure proper functioning of the instrument before the testing.
A license medical laboratory technologist must know by heart his or her duties and responsibilities on specific areas to avoid confusion and overlapping. The scope of practice statement identifies the area of responsibilities and where he or she is accounted for.
