You don't want to flood your kitchen because you forgot to turn off the water, and you don't your house to explode because you forgot to turn off the gas. You've got to clear plenty of space to put all the stuff your going to remove. Pieces of wall, old pipes, whatever you are going to be repairing, you're going to need a pile for all the junk. Make sure it's out of the way, so you don't trip over it in the middle of the night.
To make sure you don't do any damage to surrounding areas, cover everything before you begin. Use old blankets, and things like that. Make sure to tape them down just in case.
Be careful when doing any demolition. It may be fun to swing the sledge hammer around and break stuff, but it won't be fun any more if you miss and accidentally hit the TV set.
When you take your time, and go slowly, you'll have a much higher chance of success. Remember the old piece of advice, measure twice, and cut once. When you apply this every step of the way, you should have no trouble.
