Dream Inception in the Real World

As you fall asleep at night you will begin in the first phase of sleep before moving on the next four levels of deeper sleep and unconsciousness. In this first stage you will be mostly in control of your thoughts just as you are mostly, but not likely completely, in control of your own thoughts while reading this article.

As you lay in bed thinking you will begin to lose consciousness and slip into the first stage of light sleep. As the night continues you will pass through the levels of sleep and will enter at least a couple of times into REM sleep, the lighter sleep that finds your eyes twitching erratically underneath you eyelids and the majority of your dreams being created by your unconscious mind.

The thoughts that you entertained during your waking hours including and especially those in the moments of semi-wakefulness right before sleeping will influence your dreams especially those in your REM sleep. Your subconscious mind will begin to be influenced by your conscious thoughts and so your conscious thoughts will likely find a way into your dreams at night.

The term inception denotes the origin of something and for the purpose of dream inception it means to control the contents of a dream by planting a seed of thought from which the dream will have its origin. There are different methods of sharing ideas with someone such as having a normal conversation and using such rhetoric devices as reasoning and logic to change a person’s thoughts.

Among the distinct methods that thoughts can be shared and assimilated into the thinking patterns of different people there is a single method that will generally produce good results in any situation. This is the rebound method, also called the white bear effect.

The term centers of the fact that, when told to avoid a certain thought, people will be drawn to think about that certain thing. If you are told specifically to not think about a white bear you would have to have a rather dexterous mind to avoid thinking of white bears.

This is a rather effective method for implanting thoughts in the head of another person. If a person tries to suppress a thought they will short circuit the process of transferring their thought to their subconscious mind and will begin to think about the object in full consciousness again until a new seed is planted, probably one that has more importance to their conscious and subconscious mind than white bears.

If a person is given something to not think about just before falling asleep they will likely dream of it. This is how the rebound effect can affect the dreams of a sleeping person.
