Sleep apnea is a condition that affects the quality of a sleeper and is usually associated with snoring. Sleep apnea is cause by one of, or a combination, two causes, being a lack of exertion on the respiratory system of the sleeper or a physical obtrusion that restricts breathing to some degree.

Apnea basically means a pause or cessation of the normal breathing patterns of the sleeper and in commonly associated with snoring, if it is that a physical obtrusion is the cause of the sleep apnea. In this case, snoring may be what finally alerts the sleeper or their sleep partner that there is a problem.

Some of the main symptoms of sleep apnea are simply the symptoms that result from not getting an adequate amount of quality sleep for an extended period of time. These could include a general feeling of drowsiness, fatigue during the waking hours of the day, an inability to focus or concentrate due to a lack of sleep as well as weight loss or weight gain.

Apnea is the word for the actual cessation of breathing during sleep and can last anywhere from 5 seconds to a full minute. Apneas can happen only a handful of times during an hour or 30 times or more.

Depending on the length and frequency of each apnea the sleeper could suffer a huge range of effects. If you sleep apnea kept you from breathing for only a few seconds every hour and was not the result to a physical obtrusion that caused loud snoring then you would not be likely to be suffering from or even diagnosed with anything but extremely mild sleep apnea.

However, if you move to the other end of the spectrum then you could be without breath while you sleep for somewhere between thirty and forty percent of the time during sleep. This presents a huge problem since a lack of breath could be limiting the amount of oxygen that is able to enter your blood stream and help rejuvenate your mind and body.

There are different treatments that treat sleep apnea in its various forms. Sleep apnea is usually diagnosed with the help of a sleep test that either takes place in the patient’s own home or in a sleep center where some poor college student has taken a night shift watching people sleep while sacrificing his own precious sleep hours in the pursuit of academic success.
