Benefits Of Office Partitioning
by Katy Quinn(10)
Offices can be organized in two main ways - open and partitioned office plans. In open office plans, office workers are in an open room such that they are in open contact with each other. On the other hand, in a office partitioning system, workers are either given private rooms to work in or the room is subdivided to offer some kind privacy to each worker. Compared to open room, the partitioned system may seem expensive to set up, but does office partitioning improve productivity?
Subdividing an office allows workers to arrange their rooms the way they want. This way, every worker is able to redesign the office environment to what makes them feel comfortable. A comfortable worker is happy; a happy worker is more productive.
Some people are of the opinion that the partitioned system limits communication among colleagues. This is not necessarily true, as it has been observed that most of the communication that takes in open office plans is not beneficial to the company. Workers end up talking about issues that do not concern the company thereby misusing company time. Office partitioning ensures that only useful communication takes place hence productivity.
The thought of always being watched by the boss is intimidating especially to a new worker. In a office partitioning system, every employee has privacy; consequently, they are free to experiment on their work without necessarily being questioned. This way, an employee only presents his or her best copy of work after proper experimentation. Open office plans are chaotic. On one side of the room, a worker could be thinking of how to execute a project, while on the other side, another worker could be chatting to a client on phone. Naturally, the person on phone will disrupt all the other workers in the room. Furthermore, since all office supplies are used communally, they are likely to be misused as no one is in charge. In a partitioned room system, office supplies and equipments are given to specific employees thus easily monitored.
If there is a disease outbreak in an open office plan, it will easily spread to all employees. Colds and flu are airborne and would spread quickly in an open office compared to partitioned offices. Sick workers are less productive. However, before an office is partitioned, it is important to consider the opinion of an expert in office partitioning and arrangement. Also consult your employees. Furthermore, find a way to bring out the best of both office systems.
