The Advantages Of Recycling Rainwater

As everyone knows, the prices of all commodities in the UK are steadily rising. When we talk about commodities, generally we are referring to food, petrol, diesel, gas and electricity. However, not many consider mains water as commodity. After all, all we have to do is turn on a tap and water appears as if by magic, so why worry too much about it? The truth is, water is fast becoming a commodity that is expensive. Local water boards are now charging increasing amounts to supply water to properties, and water bills are higher than ever. So it makes sense that the more we can save mains water the better it will be for all of us.
This is where the concept of rainwater harvesting comes into the equation. A Rainwater harvesting system will allow you to recycle rainwater that falls on the roof of your property. This recycled rainwater can then be collected and reused to flush toilets, wash cars, and take the place of many things you would normally have to use mains water for, such as washing machines and outside taps. Because re-using rainwater is free, this is a huge benefit and can potentially save hundreds of pounds. In fact, you can save up to 50% of your usual mains water usage, and that is a significant amount indeed, especially as the average household can use tens of thousands of litres of water a year.
The actual process of recycling rainwater is achieved by attaching the downpipes from your roof to an underground storage tank called a Graf Carat tank that can provide many gallons of water storage. This tank can be topped up by the mains supply if necessary, but most times of the year it will be virtually full just from rainwater alone. This water can then be pumped into your home and used to feed as many devices necessary, or it can be fed to outdoor taps solely for garden use, or for washing the car.
Whatever use you put your recycled rainwater to, you will find it an extremely valuable resource, and the amount of water you take from the mains supply will be cut considerably. In most cases the cost of having a rainwater harvesting system installed in your home will be reclaimed within two years, and after that the savings you make are without any overheads at all. As all underground storage tanks usually come with a 15-year guarantee, you can't fail to save money.
