What Happens To Your Rain Harvesting System When There's No Rain?

If you've spent money on a brand new rain harvesting system for your home, you will probably be praying for it to rain so that your new water storage tank is filled to the brim at all times. It's only natural that when you've paid good money for something that will save on your monthly water bill, you want to be sure your investment is working with the upmost efficiency at all times. After all, the more it rains, the more you can potentially save.
In the winter, there will usually be enough rainfall to keep your underground storage tanks full, but what about in the summer months when the average rainfall is much lower? Well, firstly you never should worry about your tank completely drying out. If there's only a small amount of rainfall, your tank will empty only to a pre-set minimum level, and then a float sensor will activate, and your tank will be topped up via the mains water supply. The float switch makes sure that mains water is only added when it's absolutely needed, and it only tops up the water level a certain amount. This way you only use as much mains water as needed to keep the system working, and the rest of the water in the tank is recycled rainwater.
Because your system will be set to draw water from your underground storage tank at all times, the process of topping up your water storage is automatic and completely invisible to you. You never have to worry about whether the rain harvesting system will deprive you of water. The system only tops up your tank to a certain point with mains water, because you want to leave room for any potential rainfall. It makes no sense to fill a tank to the brim with mains water, as the chances are the next day there could be a cloudburst.
In times of severe drought of course, you may have to rely more and more on mains water, but remember that this is always offset against the times when rainwater is plentiful. The UK has experienced large amounts of rainfall during autumn months over previous years, with even widespread flooding in some areas. So during these times your water storage tanks will be filled to the brim with recycled rainwater, and these are the times you will hardly be using any mains water at all.
