The Benefits of Using Gravity Conveyors

Parts picking and assembly lines are an important part of the daily operations of thousands of businesses in the United States. One thing that can make these important processes much easier is a gravity conveyor system.
To put it simply, gravity conveyors are a type of industrial equipment commonly used to allow the quick movement of items from one location to another. Such a system is made up of many different pieces, often constructed of metal for durability and stability. This includes a metal frame that holds the entire system together. However, the key component is a long series of either cylinders or wheels placed one after another.
How to operate such a system for the purpose of parts picking or an assembly line is rather simple. An item is placed onto this track of cylinders and pushed to move it further down the line. As the name suggests, the force of gravity also helps this system operate. If the roller track is put on a decline, items placed on the track will simply travel its length due to the force of gravity.
There are also likely to be more components to gravity conveyor systems. One option is the inclusion of retarders. These can be placed on the track to slow down items moving across the cylinders at certain points. These may be needed, depending on what is moved down the line.
For example, retarders are often used by shipping companies and manufacturers to make sure that any packages containing fragile items do not smash into each other on the line. Items that move too fast may also fly off the rollers where there is no barrier to prevent it.
The cylinders or rollers used are typically made out of either steel or aluminum. The rollers also use axles that are connected to the conveyor's metal frame. Bearings will be used with the axle to make sure that the rollers turn smoothly. However, these bearings may occasionally need to be lubricated to make sure that is the case.
Gravity conveyors are also efficient to use for parts picking or in assembly lines, since they are highly portable and customizable. Such a system can be quickly assembled and reassembled as needed. If it needs to be moved to another area in a plant or even another building, this can be done with minimal time and labor.
Such a system can also be modified to fit different situations. By adding or subtracting gravity flow track, a conveyor can be made longer or shorter. Such a track can also be altered to change direction or turn a corner. This means a gravity conveyor system can probably be set up just about anywhere on a factory floor.
