Can You Choose the Gender of Your Child?

Experts believe that you can choose the gender of your child but of course this is not as easy as eating a certain type of food or following a certain type of sexual position. Choosing the gender of your child requires timing and above all patience.

Although there have been several techniques that were proven to be effective in determining the sex of a baby, it would be safe to rely on medical science to do the trick. If you want to choose the gender of your child, there are two roads to follow: the natural way and the high tech way.

The Natural Way of Choosing the Gender of Your Child:

One of the most well known strategies was developed by Landrum B. Shettles, MD, PhD and it involved timing sexual intercourse to a woman’s menstrual cycle along with assuming certain positions during lovemaking.

In Shettles’ strategy, he explains that the male (Y) sperm is faster, smaller but rather short-lived compared to the female (X) sperm. It is then suggested that if you desire a baby boy, having sex closest to the time of ovulation is the best. The faster male sperm could reach the egg sooner than its female counterpart.

Discharging sperm closest to the cervix is also the best way to ensure that the male sperm gets to the egg first. A position that takes advantage of this situation is a rear entry position or when the man enters the woman from behind.

On the other hand, parents who wish to have a beautiful baby girl are encouraged to have sex about two to four days before ovulation because this is the time when only the resilient female sperm will prevail. Assuming a missionary position is the best way to ensure that a girl is on the way. This classic and natural way to choose the gender of your baby is effective at least 75% of the time and many reproductive health experts who have incorporated this method have even had 95% success rate.

The High Tech Way of Choosing the Gender of Your Child:

The best and probably the most effective way of ensuring the sex of your baby is done through sorting out the male sperm from the female sperm or the MicroSort technique. This strategy is called the gold standard in choosing the gender of a baby and has been known to be have a success rate of 91% among parents who want girls and about 73% for couples who want to raise a boy.

There are other techniques to make gender choosing possible like preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and chronic villus sampling (CVS). Both of these methods are used to detect or screen for medical illnesses but have been found a perfect solution to distinguish sex in sperm. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine on the other hand recommends neither one of the methods does not see gender selection for couples as a way to even the gender ration in a family or clan.
