A growing number of clued-up consumers are making significant savings on their holiday shopping, thanks to the latest range of promotional discounts, credit and cashback services. There's never been more ways to save money on booking a holiday, and much of this is thanks to advances in technology, which are helping consumers to be smart shoppers from their computers or smartphones.
Compare Prices
One of the most useful apps for smartphone users allows them to find and compare prices on a product by simply taking a photo of the bar code. The app then automatically finds out where the item is sold and for how much. Not only does it mean that consumers can choose to visit retailers with the cheapest prices, but often retailers will offer discounts to shoppers who can show proof of a competitor's lower price for the same item. Apps like these empower consumers and help them to make well-informed shopping decisions.
Find Voucher Codes, Coupons and Special Offers
Another way of making decent savings is to look up coupons, voucher codes or other special offers. Often these can be used over a smartphone, and can be presented to a cashier at a checkout that will either enter a code number or scan a barcode on-screen to provide the discount. It's always worth doing a quick search to see whether you could reduce the cost of a purchase.
Social Media
Using social media effectively can be another great way of finding ways of making big savings on shopping. Following, friending or liking your favourite brands or retailers on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace could expose you to special offers which you might otherwise have missed. Often brands will provide exclusive coupon codes or short-term promotions to engaged social media followers and friends.
Credit Card Points
Many of the top credit card providers offer bonus points or cashback to cardholders who use their site as a portal to other online retailers. Using a credit card for online shopping can rack up some significant credit card points. There's also the added benefit of certain protection that comes with credit cards.
Cash Back Sites
Cashback sites are growing in number and popularity at the moment, as more and more consumers use these sites to find great deals. The sites negotiate superior deals with retailers, and offer all or part of this back to the buyer, in the form of cash or credit. These sites a free to use, and many of them make their money simply through display ads. They're a useful way to find money-saving deals.
Bill Weston writes on a number of subjects including cash back sites and making the most of cashback at Christmas.
