Bonding Adhesives - The Most Important And Most Used Aspect Of Adhesion

by Jeffery Nevil(136) Red Star

You might not be very interested in bonding adhesives, but the fact is they impact on our lives in a very significant way. If you've ever been in a car adhesives have had an impact on you. If you've ever used an electronic device adhesives have had an impact on you. If you've ever had a plaster put on you after cutting yourself or had a bandage on injury adhesives have had an impact on you. If you've ever been to an airport and looked for the sign pointing you to the correct check in area adhesives have had an impact on you. If you wear glasses, adhesives are probably impacting your life as you read this.

Yes, adhesives are pretty much everywhere. It's a amazing thing, but most items and products that exist require some form of adhesion to make them work. So let's explore what adhesives have done for us in a bit more detail.

It's not simply a matter of glue; adhesives influence a range of products with various bonding strengths that can be used for a huge range of purposes. Masking tape is a product we're probably all familiar with. These tapes are designed to be easily removed after use and might be used by during DIY work to mark off a border to create clear paint lines. Masking tapes aren't just used when painting your bathroom. The automotive trade uses them in the painting of cars. These tapes are specially designed for professional and industrial use. They may have a backing, this is the actual tape part and not the adhesive itself, which is highly dextrous to create fluid and precise lines to mask off. Other features available for masking tape are repeatability, the ability to handle high-temperatures or very fast adhesion. It all depends on the intended use, companies will tailor their products for industrial or domestic use to provide an effective product.

We're beginning to see how big the world of adhesion is. Bonding adhesives are perhaps the most important and most used aspect of adhesion. It sounds obvious but this aspect is the actual sticking together of things. Related products may include double coated tapes for the joining together of components, very high bond (VHB) adhesives for joining metals or electrically conductive bonding for circuit bonding. Again, a good company will create custom made products for a stronger, lighter, better looking, longer lasting and less costly adhesives - dependent on a client's specification. Bonding adhesives are by the far the most common and widely used form of adhesion.

Some are heat activated, which often provides a stronger bond and allows time for positioning and repositioning which other adhesives do not. Some are thermally conductive to allow for the transfer of heat. This can be important in products that create heat output, such as computers, where a heat sink may be bonded to the internal components in order to dissipate the temperatures generated and allow for a more efficient product that will have a longer working lifespan. Bonding adhesives are often used in public signage, and these require a very high bond and instant adhesion in order to cope with the weight of a sign and ease assembly.

Well, it's a world you may not fully appreciate, but given the far reaching applications hopefully you've got to know some of the important aspects of adhesion. It's an interesting sector, and after reading this I hope you really like it too. I hope you've bonded with it as much as I have.
