The Artistic Value Of Sheet Metal

by Jeffery Nevil(143) Red Star

When you think of sheet metal you most likely imagine a big warehouse with big oversized crucibles of molten ore waiting to be poured into vast moulds so it can be shipped off around the world subsequently being used to create some of the biggest and sometimes ugliest structures known to man...but sheet metal has a secret artistic side in the right hands it can be melded into a piece of art and express feeling and insight in a far more profound way then what a sky scraper does.

Sheet metal fabrication isn't merely about strong sleek building material, it has also has been part of a massive art movements. The art deco period of the 1920-30's was massively influenced by metal and sculptor mainly because of its fluidity and delicate possibilities despite being constructed from hard components. Even dating as far back to the Bronze and Iron Age's metal manipulation allowed this artistic process to grow over time to become something more than just a material to create simple things like spears' and shields.

Sheet metal production has been around for a long time but recently has become so intercut and detailed that it is possible to create a precision engineered item which gives the opportunity to open the doors and generate all different kinds of weird and wonderful shapes. With techniques such as sawing, shearing, chiselling, lasers, torches and water jets; sheet metal can be hammered into any form giving artistic license to go zany and make unconventional pieces of art.

You can use a wide array of metals and combinations of such to manufacture the art. The most popular are copper, steel, iron, bronze and aluminium because of its relative flexibility though you can use nearly any metal even gold, silver and titanium can be salvaged into the process.

It has become an increasingly popular choice for high street home ware stores to stock metal wall art as it's versatile and relatively cheap to source because of its versatility you can construct nearly any style or object and bring it to life with glazes and paints making it very marketable. On the other price scale you can even commission custom made articles so you could have a replica of the giant bull on Wall Street or even the lions at Trafalgar Square but with a bit of imagination you can invent your own unique pieces or even buy one from an artist for a great talking point because who knows why or where you would store a four ton lion in your house.

Jeffrey Nevil writes on a number of subjects including sheet metal fabrication.
