If you want to feed hummingbirds, the best way to go about it is to plant some flowers which produce nectar that they enjoy feeding on.

However, if you don't have any flowers which attract hummingbirds naturally or you'd like to be absolutely sure that you get to enjoy the sight of hummingbirds in your garden, then you may want to put out a hummingbird feeder as well.

You can place your feeders in spots which will make it easy for you to observe the hummingbirds as they feed.

  • It's easy to attract them; just some sugar water in a colorful (bright red is a favorite color) feeder will do the trick.
  • There are a wide variety of hummingbird feeders on the market, so there's plenty to choose from and you shouldn't have any trouble finding one which you like.
  • Naturally, you'll want to keep your bird feeder at least six feet high in order to prevent the birds from being preyed upon by cats.

However, the real question here is when you should put out your hummingbird feeder in order to attract these tiny, but incredibly beautiful and fascinating birds to your garden. Exactly when you should put out your hummingbird feeder depends a great deal on where you live.

  • For instance, if you live in the far southern states along the Gulf Coast, then it's possible that you'll start seeing hummingbirds showing up as early as February, but if you live in the upper Midwest (Illinois or Wisconsin, for instance) or New England, then it may not be until late April that you see your first hummingbirds of the year.

As a rough guide, if you live in the south, you can put out your feeder in early March; if you're in the southern parts of the Midwest and the mid-Atlantic, then the beginning of April is probably not too early.

  • However, if you live farther north, then mid-April is probably the earliest that you can reasonably expect to see hummingbirds show up in your garden.
  • If you live in Canada, you probably won't start seeing these birds until sometime in May.

  • Hummingbirds have been known to spend the winter months in these parts of the country before migrating north to feed on spring and summer flowers as they emerge - and when they come your way, now you'll be ready to put out your feeder and enjoy the experience of having these amazing birds in your garden.
