A Brief Guide To Swimming Pool Covers

Swimming pool covers play a very important part in the swimming pool cleaning routine. Used correctly they will minimize the time owners take keeping the pool clean and the cost of chemical water treatments. Some swimming pool covers will also, under certain circumstances, raise the pool water temperature, whilst others may help insulate the pool and keep the existing temperature.

The main types of pool covers are as follows:

Pool Solar covers: Made using a high grade plastic material that looks like a heavy duty bubble wrap. These covers are available in a range of thicknesses from 200 micron to 600 micron, giving various degrees of robustness. All of these covers will help to increase pool water temperature, and help to eliminate evaporation and heat loss. Evaporation accounts for 90% of heat loss from pools. Often used on domestic outdoor pools.

Heat Retention covers: Made using a thick, typically 5mm or 6mm, laminated foam material that helps to maintain the pool water temperature by cutting out evaporation. Usually used on commercial indoor pools, but are also effective on outside pools.

Liquid pool covers: These so called covers are really a thin liquid that floats on the surface of the pool and helps to prevent evaporation (see above). Not very effeicient due to loss from the pool surface via filtering and skimming, people entering and leaving the pool, and loss due to wind action.

Winter Debris Covers: are designed to filter out the debris such as dirt that may enter the pool during the winter. Any debris that enters the pool can cause discolouration of the pool water and also the pool surfaces. This means that it will be harder work to ready the pool for opening in the Spring and more expense on chemicals too. The cover is a mesh material that allows water to pass through, but the small mesh blocks any debris from going through. The covers are supported by webbing straps that are sewn on to the cover, and fixed to the ground with stainless steel fittings.

Above Ground Pool Covers: Covers are available for small pools such as the Intex range of splash pools. The solar covers are usually at the lower end of the thickness range and are less hard wearing. Debris covers that are solid plastic with a central drain are also available.

Accurate Pool measuring is important when ordering a cover. Always measure the pool at the water line, not the surround. For oblong pools this is easy but for more difficult pool shapes it can be more tricky. To measure a kidney shaped pool for example, it is best to use a triangulation method of measuring.
