5 Ways to Spoil Halloween

Before you set your little goblins loose on October 31st, be aware of these top Halloween hazards:
1. Candy Coma
It’s tempting to want to eat all the sugary, chocolaty treats at once, but too much candy will lead to tummy aches and indigestion.
Solution: Fill up by eating a healthy meal before trick-or-treating and set a limit on how much candy can be consumed in one sitting.
2. Dashing in the Dark
That dark costume might look great indoors, but drivers will have a hard time seeing trick-or-treaters crossing the street if they’re dressed all in black.
Solution: Add a few strips of reflective tape to dark costumes and consider carrying a flashlight.
3. Trip or Treat?
Costumes that are too long, and masks that make it hard to see can lead to bumps, bruises and sprains.
Solution: Make sure costumes aren’t dragging on the ground and consider wearing makeup instead of a mask.
4. Suspicious Treats
Halloween candy tampering is extremely rare, but eating unwrapped treats or homemade items from strangers increases the risk of consuming a poisonous substance, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers.
Solution: Throw away any candy that is not sealed in its original wrapper and only accept homemade treats from people you know.
5. Dressed to Chill
In many parts of the country, little pirates and princesses are wading through snow as they make their way from house to house on Halloween. Not dressing appropriately for cold weather increases the risk of developing frostbite or even hypothermia.
Solution: Dressing in layers and wearing gloves will keep trick-or-treaters happy and warm without compromising their costume.
Be safe and have a spooky good time this Halloween. If you do need medical attention for a non-life threatening illness or injury, most urgent care centers have extended evening hours for treating walk-in patients.
