Prince or Princess - What Determines the Baby Gender?

by Estelle Petersen(33)

Whilst there are many couples out there who are lucky enough to conceive the correct gender they always wanted, and others who just do not have luck on their side. Some couples will keep on trying to complete their family just to end up with another child of the same gender. What determines the baby's gender and how can you as a parent help in the process?

There are many things that you can do to influence the outcome of your child's gender, which I will explain more in this article.

Both, the mother and the father contribute chromosomes which ultimately decide the baby's gender. The mother-to-be will always contribute one chromosome sperm, the X chromosome. The father is the contributor of two chromosome sperm, the X or the Y chromosome sperm.

If the X chromosome sperm from the father fertilises with the X chromosome sperm from the mother, the end result will be XX, which means two female chromosomes, this will result in a girl baby. If the Y chromosome sperm from the father fertilises the mother’s egg, this will result in an XY combination, this will produce a baby boy. The end product will always depend on which sperm chromosomes are able to complete the journey to the egg and fertilise it.

In order to conceive a girl baby, you would want the father-to-be's chromosome to be an X (girl). These X sperm have certain characteristics which makes them a bit different to the Y (boy) sperm. The X sperm is more resilient and can live up to five days. They are slower than the boy sperm and take longer to reach the egg for fertilization.

If you are planning on a girl baby, then it is best to conceive early to give them a good chance. But don't worry too much about this as there are some tools you can use to help you. To predict your ovulation and best time for conception for a baby girl, you can use a saliva ovulation predictor that can show changes quite quickly. Once you know your ovulation cycle, and then plan conception around three days before ovulation. This will give the boy sperm enough time to die off and only leave the hardy girl sperm to fertilize the egg.

If you want to conceive a boy, this is what determines the baby gender:  If you want to end up with a son, then you will need an XY combination. This means the chromosome from the father should be the Y (boy) sperm. The boy sperm are quick swimmers and do not live as long as the X (girl) sperm, they are the weaker ones.

In order to conceive the boy baby, you will need to know when you have already ovulated and when you are most fertile to conceive. Boy sperm are the weaker sperm and requires a lower pH to make the environment more conducive for them. Ensure that your eat foods (low pH) to create the correct environment for the boy sperm to flourish in.
