Generator Associates have been selected as mains contractor for a new N+1 backup power system at Councils Head Office in 2011.
Introduction: Wealden District Council required a complex system of backup power that would provide power in the event of a mains failure, and in times of insufficient mains supply at their Head Office in Crowborough.
The council offices have various data centre functions based there, and covering 35 wards they provide services to the third largest district in South East England. Working with a team of consultants and departments within the Council, the scope of the contract was researched, designed and proposed, to provide additional benefits and cost saving items to the client.
The council often required more mains power than their current infrastructure and substation would provide. There was not only this issue of insufficient power, but they also required mains backup power. Working together, the team developed a system that would enable the Council toutilisethe level of mains power currently available on site, with bespoke switchgear that would activate the generator to turn on/off and provide power to the entire facility as well as the data centre, once rising load demand reached a predetermined level. This meant the Council had an alternative source of mains power when load demand reached near mains capacity. The bespoke system designed also enabled the generator to act as a backup generator in the event of a mains power failure.
Solution: Following analysis and calculations, a 400kVA Volvo generator was selected, in conjunction with a 9000 litre external fuel tank to ensure sufficient running time. The entire control system with switchgear was custom designed and Generator Associates were chosen as mains contractor to supply, install and commission the entire system. Also providing full CDM and project management services on this project for the Council.
Logistics & Installation: We were selected to provide all civils and mechanical/electrical connection of the generator system including supplying and installing connection cables between the generator, switchgear and building. We also re-cabled within the Council offices in order to segregate between the essential and non-essential load. For security, specialist fencing and guarding were designed, supplied and installed to form a complete installation.
Support: As part on the ongoing support and guidance offered to our clients, Generator Associates will provide routine service and maintenance on the generator and 24/7 emergency call out if required. We believe it is important to ensure all parties involved are regularly updated on a project and we like to keep in contact with them well after commissioning and hand over.
