Tar Baby and the Debt Ceiling Debate

If we didn’t need further proof that there’s more to the Republican Parties’ pertinaciousness in negotiating the debt ceiling debate than fiscal responsibility, read on.
House of Representative Doug Lamborn, a Republican from Colorado went on a local radio show comparing any association with President Obama to the likeness of touching a “tar baby.”
Hmm, what was he thinking? Sometimes things just slip out apparently. He now claims he meant no harm or offense and he’s certain the personal letter he sent to the President containing his apology will be accepted because in his words, the President “is a man of character.”Apparently, that sentiment escaped him on not only the radio show, but during negotiations. How exactly does one morph from not wanting anything to do with the President into a reformed person calling his nemesis a "man of character?" What was Doug Lamborn really thinking?
On the 630 KHOW Capils and Silverman radio show, Lamborn said:
“Even if some people say, ‘Well the Republicans should have done this or they should have done that,’ they will hold the President responsible. Now, I don’t even want to have to be associated with him. It’s like touching a tar baby and you get it, you’re stuck, and you’re a part of the problem now and you can’t get away.”
According to HuffPost Politics, the congressman was “attempting to tell a radio audience last week that the president's policies have created an economic quagmire for the nation and are responsible for the dismal economic conditions our country faces. He regrets that he chose the phrase 'tar baby,' rather than the word 'quagmire.'
It’s hard to believe, but apparently the Congressman suddenly contracted a bad case of foot-in-mouth disease the radio station. If you're deaf in one ear, and "hard of hearing" in the other, it's obvious that his Jim Crow comments targeted the President.
And even if you're too young to know what is referenced by the harsh word, it comes across as abrasive. Today, the word "tar baby" is no different than the N-word. Just ask Dr. Laura Catherine Schlessinger, who fell from grace after her on-air comments to a woman of color. Recently, Schlessinger made the ultimate faux pas when she used a racial term beginning with N and ending in R on air. Actually, Schlessinger used that word eleven times over a 5 minute period.
But as it goes, when high-profile people like Congressman Doug Lamborn put their foot in their loud mouth pieces, and garbage comes out, an obligatory apology always follows, but their real opinion comes through loud and clear.
Dr. Laura Schlessingerhas apologized after launching into a racially charged rant, during which Schlessinger, in her own words, "articulated the 'n' word all the way out -- more than one time." Schlessinger's rant followed her attacks on homosexuality as "deviant" and "dysfunctional behavior," for which she also apologized.
This puts Joe Biden's recent dropping the F word bomb in the shade. I guess I missed his apology.
