Whistler Village Offers Fun Ease-Of-Access And A Safe Place For Vacationing
by Lise Pin
Whistler BC is home to one of North America's finest ski and snowboarding resorts - Whistler Blackcomb. Whistler Blackcomb, by measures such as terrain, is the largest ski resort in North America. This mountain continues to rank as one of the best ski destinations in the world and is incredibly popular with tourists for this reason specifically.
However, Whistler has many appealing features. One of the most appealing is the Whistler Village pedestrian area which is a charming car-free zone where pedestrians can wander freely. This area is great for shopping, restaurants and outdoor patios. But, one of its most rewarding characteristics is its transformation during a festival. The pedestrian zone turns into an entertainment center with booths, displays, and exhibits providing entertainment, products, and giveaways.
Whistler Blackcomb hosts many events and several festivals throughout the year. Two of the largest events are as follows:
- Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival is a ten-day and ten-night event which showcases the latest in skiing and snowboarding where there are outdoor concerts, sporting showdowns, fashion shows, endless amounts of nightlife and a celebration on the streets of Whistler. This festival takes place during the month of April.
- Kokanee Crankworx Mountain Bike Festival is a huge tourist festival drawing over 20,000 spectators to the premier biking events. Whistler Village buzzes with activity including a busy and fun pedestrian area where there are exhibits, demonstrations, booths, and free giveaways.
There's still room on the mountain for outdoor enthusiasts to mountain bike or ski/snowboard during these festivals. And, for those who aren't interested in the adrenaline rush, there are numerous things to do in Whistler including spas, restaurants, shopping, a kids zone, nearby lake, camping, extensive paved trails and much more.
Whistler Village contains hotels and condos that have easy-access to the pedestrian zone and the ski hills. However, if the hustle and bustle of the town center is not of interest, the village is split into several zones including:
- Whistler Village which refers to the main core.
- Whistler Upper Village which is located at at the base of Blackcomb Mountain and is just outside of the downtown core.
- Whistler Creekside is a secondary area located at the base of Whistler Mountain. It's one of the original areas of town and has undergone a major renovation for the 2010 Olympics.
- Whistler Village North offers visitors convenience and seclusion. It is centered around a market place and grocery store and only minutes from the town core.
- Whistler Valley is great for those with a car and makes a terrific alternative to the town as it's peaceful with terrific scenic views.
If you're heading to Whistler BC for recreation and relaxation, Whistler Village has a wide range of things to offer visitors. It's particularly fun to head out during one of the major festivals. Be sure to book accommodations in advance and select a part of town that best suits your needs and interests.
