Renaissance Jewelry And Its Significance

Renaissance jewelry was worn as a means of decoration, but had lots of meaning as well. Much of the inspiration behind these works of art were nature, life experiences and religion. Some of them were very simple depending on the gems and stones that were used, but could be very elaborate in design.

Various ornaments were used to demonstrate the love that two people had for each other. They were usually heart shaped and were worn as pendants. Sometimes a precious stone was set in the pendant such as a diamond or other gem. There were also rings that had elaborate designs which were also used as wedding rings.

The Memento Mori was used in times of mourning the death of a loved one. It was used to remind people of their mortality and that they too would soon leave their loved ones. Skulls and coffins were used in the design of these forms of jewelry. As a way to remember the person, a piece of their hair was kept.

Broaches were quite popular as well and one type that was worn was known as a garland. When one thinks of a garland they usually think of flowers and that's what these types of broaches represent. Much of the art that went into these items was inspired by nature. They were designed to look like floral wreaths.

Other types of renaissance jewelry worn during this period were hair nets that were decorated with pearls which were worn quite frequently. Though pearls are normally round in shape they were not always that way. Pearls were also worn around the neck and as earrings.

Other forms of Renaissance festival jewelry had religious significance. Symbols of crosses and the emblems of saints could have been found in rings. There were belts known as girdles that were worn around the waist that were made of leather or precious stones. Some were used as a way to attach prayer books. This shows that jewelry was not merely worn for decoration, but for a purpose.
