How to Find the Right Gallery

by Chris Sabian(41)

I read an interesting piece the other day about how to find the right gallery for your work. They talked about ensuring that the gallery was suitable for your work etc, etc.

My advice is not to bother unless you have pots of money. Why?

Well it is unfortunate that the majority of independent art galleries and dealers bind their artists into sale or return agreements. In such galleries you will find that everyone else has been paid in the normal way: rent, rates, electric, gas, telephone, decor etc. Everyone that is, but the artists who provide the gallery with their source of income.

Added to this the commission taken by the gallery for selling a piece and then take off what expenses the artist has incurred and there isn't a lot left in the cookie jar. So why would you line someone else's pockets who has taken no financial risk in you as an artist?

Fortunately their are a few galleries and dealers who have recognised this one sided affair and now have an annual budget for the purchase of professional artwork built into their accounting system.
