The Importance Of Protecting Your Company Brand

There are few symbols as well recognized internationally as the Coca Cola brand. Worldwide, this soft drink is generally considered to be among the best, and no matter what language you speak, asking for a "Coca Cola" will be easily understood - even more so than water. Clearly, your company's brand can have a massive impact on your bottom line, and as such protecting your company brand is a very important aspect of branding overall. A well-respected, instantly visible brand will certainly have a positive impact on your consumer base; but establishing such a brand requires that your brand be unique and protected.

To become a brand leader, your customer must identify solely with your brand and the associated products or services you provide. When given the choice between a brand-name product and a no-name product, there is plenty of evidence to show that the branded product will be more successful in the market. However, brand confusion and a poorly conceived brand can have a negative impact on your company's success. Ultimately, your competition is determined to take away your brand power and your customers so you must always be aware of how your brand is being used in the market. Consider the lost income that major clothing labels like Guess or GAP because of brand knock-offs, and you will begin to understand the reason these companies work tirelessly to protect their image and subsequent brand.

Not only is branding important for building relationships with customers, but your brand sets you apart from your competitors. Once customers begin to associate quality products and/or services with your brand, they tend to choose your brand over less satisfactory alternatives. Customers not only recognize Coca Cola but identify it as among the most delicious cola options. Therefore, protecting your brand also helps you to become the best and convey your superiority to your customers. Again, brand confusion will essentially split your market share as consumers are not sure which company is offering the best product.

Indeed, there have been some very famous cases in recent history where re-branding has had a negative impact on a company and their customers. The GAP for example decided to update their iconic logo to a more contemporary design, and the backlash from customers was so intense that they scrapped their rebranding plans. Whether you are just in the beginning stages of developing your brand or you are reworking your brand, it is always important to remember that the purpose of your brand is to create a stronger connection with your customers. Rebranding may or may not have the results you desire, and if your brand is already respected by your customers the risks of rebranding are undeniable.

In short, your brand should not only make your customer identify with your company and the products and services it supplies, but it should also set you apart from your competitors. Protecting this connection and ultimately protecting your brand itself, will solidify your place in the market while communicating to your customers the core values of your company at a glance.
